Mar. 25 RTE: Old Washington State Park

1830 when Texas was a whole ‘nuther country you were leaving the United States if you were traveling west and passed through the town of Washington, Arkansas. Present day Oklahoma was the Indian Nations and Washington, Arkansas was at the crossroads of America’s Manifest Destiny.

Jim Bowie had his famous Bowie Knife made in Washington by the town’s blacksmith, James Black. All sorts of pilgrims passed through Washington and later several US Armies marched through on their way to clash with the Mexican Army. Then there was that War of Northern Aggression…

Old Washington is now an Arkansas State Park. If you have not been to the old town of Washington near Hope, Arkansas, you should try to spend the day. The whole town is a historical landmark and State Park. It is a very nice place to visit.

The Old Tavern is where Jim Bowie, Sam Houston and Davy Crockett ate a meal before they rode into legend way back there. You can do the same by joining us at Noon on March 25th, 2006 for our annual visit.

Old Washington is 9 miles north of I-40 and Hope, Arkansas.
