Bike to Bike Communication

I bought a used 2-meter HAM radio yesterday and got to talk to some folks around the area. Holy cow - in simplex (moblie to moblie), with 5 watts of power, it is amazing! I’m pretty sure I was getting out 4 or 5 miles with perfect clarity. Absolutely kicks FRS or GMRS or CB radios’ butt! And, that was with the stock antenna. When I’m on the bike, I’ll have a 4 foot antenna which will pump the range up even more.

Best part - you can get a 5 watt handheld unit for $150 new, not much more than a good GMRS radio.

If we wanted to do bike to bike communication for next year, I’d strongly suggest we use HAM radios instead of FRS / GMRS / CB.
